Grants of up to $20,000 to USA individual scholars to support travel research projects on the former Venetian empire. Funding is intended to support historical research in the former Venetian empire and on Venice, and assist in the study of contemporary Venetian society and culture, as well.
Funds may be used for travel to and residence in Venice and the former Venetian empire; transportation within the Veneto; and specific research expenses.
Disciplines of the humanities and social sciences are eligible areas of study, including (but not limited to) archaeology, architecture, art, bibliography, economics, history, history of science, law, literature, music, political science, religion, and theater.
One of the Venetian Research Program grants awarded will be designated as the Henry A. Millon Award in Art and Architectural History. The recipient scholar of this award is selected from the U.S. applicant pool for the Venetian awards. To be considered, it is not necessary to apply separately for this award. Selection criteria emphasize distinguished work on issues of art and architecture in Venice and its surroundings.
Past grantees only may apply for travel and research outside of the Veneto. Scholars who have already received and accepted a Delmas grant for their work in Venice and the Veneto are eligible for subsequent, one-time grants of up to $3,000 (one month maximum) to work exclusively on Venetian materials in other libraries or museums. The proposed study must be related to the previous Delmas grant.
GrantWatch ID#: 182541
Applications will be entertained for grants up to a maximum of $20,000 for a full academic year. Grants for the maximum amount are rarely awarded, and successful applicants are frequently awarded less than the amount requested.
Returning grantees can apply for a maximum of $3,000.
Award amounts are based on length of stay, plus travel and research costs.
Awarded projects must be completed by the end of September 2020.
Eligible applicants must:
- Be citizens or permanent residents of the United States
- Have experience in advanced research at the graduate level or equivalent
Application Timeline for 2019-2020:
- Applications are due Monday, December 17, 2018 at 12 noon EST.
- Letters of recommendation may arrive after the deadline, but please work to ensure their arrival before the end of December.
- The awards will be announced at the end of February 2019.
The Foundation has a two-step online application form. Step 1: Register by providing contact information and creating a login. Step 2: Fill in the online application prior to the December 17, 2018 deadline. After the application has been submitted, please log in and view the application to monitor the arrival of the Letters of Recommendation.
Letters of Recommendation are submitted through the online application form. The applicant's references will then receive an email containing a link to a web form. Letters can be added to both draft applications and submitted applications. Therefore, the foundation advises beginning one's online application well in advance and sending the invitations to one's references early in the drafting process. This will allow sufficient time for one's references to add Letters of Recommendation to the application.
Three letters of recommendation are required for stays of five weeks or more. Only two letters of recommendation are required for shorter stays.
