Grant Description
Grants and technical support to Texas small businesses and nonprofit organizations in eligible locations for professional development efforts. Funding is intended to help diversely owned small businesses and nonprofits purchase or upgrade tangible assets that support economic development in underserved communities. Eligible applicants are located in the Greater Houston area.

The goal of the grant program is to enact transformational change by investing resources into organizations and initiatives that empower and uplift communities of color. A key aspect of being transformative is to embrace a rigorous process to select and fund organizations that can demonstrate direct, tangible, and meaningful impact related to the pillars of the Houston Equity Fund listed below:

  • Social and Racial Justice: Social Services, Criminal Justice, Healthcare, Civic Engagement, Immigrant Rights, Environmental Justice, Domestic Violence/Human Trafficking
  • Economic Development: Support future talent, startups business owners, and workforce development activities that aim to address income and wealth disparities
  • Youth Empowerment and Education: Provide education, literacy, innovation, mentorship, advancement, scholarship, and career opportunities
  • Community Building: Secure access to vital resources, revitalize community spaces and celebrate Black history and culture.

In addition to opportunities to apply for and receive grants, education and empowerment sessions will be provided so that communities can receive transformative information that can positively impact lives for generations.

Grant funds must be used to acquire or upgrade tangible assets:

  • Purchase of or improvements to land
  • Construction of new buildings or facilities
  • Renovations of existing buildings or facilities
  • New or upgraded machinery, equipment (including vehicles)
  • New or updated technology
  • Purchase of inventory
  • Improvements or modernization of streets, utilities, parking lots, and landscaping.

Additional Eligibility Criteria
The Grant Program will focus on serving mission-aligned diverse-owned small businesses with employees of 1 to 100 and have 2022 annual gross revenue of $3 million or less. The Grant Program will also support mission-aligned nonprofits that are historically underserved, including grassroots and community-led organizations with up to 100 employees. Businesses and nonprofits must have been established prior to December 31, 2021, and be located within the City of Houston.

Businesses and nonprofits may be from a variety of industries/service areas and the Grant Program is intended to support entities at various stages of growth or maturity.

Ineligible
A small business or organization that received a grant in Round 1 may not apply for and be awarded a grant in round 2.
