Grants of up to $75,000 to Texas nonprofit and for-profit organizations, agencies, faith-based entities, schools, and academic institutions to conduct disability-related training sessions in rural areas. Funding is intended for training that benefits people with a wide range of disabilities, their relatives, and local community members. The goal of the grant program is to advance opportunities for more people with developmental disabilities (DD), their families, and other professionals to become skilled disability advocates and leaders in rural communities across Texas.
The state needs more leadership and advocacy training programs that are developed to support people in rural areas; to support people in areas with high rates of poverty; and to recruit and provide culturally appropriate training to those who are African American, Latino and Latina, Native American, or Asian.
Through this RFA, grantees will provide leadership development and advocacy skills training for at least 30 people each year. Grantees may use existing curricula or develop unique programs based on local or organizational needs. All curricula must be reviewed and approved by TCDD.
Examples of training topics include:
To maximize these skills, individuals with DD should have opportunities to use self-advocacy skills in service planning discussions and conversations with policy decision-makers.
