Grants to Texas nonprofit organizations in eligible locations to support general operations. Funding is intended for applicants that provide arts and cultural programs and activities to benefit the general public. Applicants must have arts named in their mission or offer arts-specific programming, and must be located in Houston.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Category 1: Applicants may apply for up to $125,000 or a maximum of 20% of the organization’s operating expenses, excluding the value of in-kind contributions.

Category 2: Applicants may apply for up to $62,500 or a maximum of 10% of the arts program budget, excluding the value of in-kind contributions.

Category 3: Awards in this category are capped at $1 million or a maximum of 3% of the organization’s operating expenses, excluding the value of in-kind contributions.

Length of Grant: January 1, 2021 – December 31, 2021

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Support for Organizations grant program accepts 501(c)3 nonprofit and fiscally sponsored applications.

Category 1: Applicants must be 501(c)3 organizations, in existence for at least one year, with the arts named in its mission which is verified by staff review of an applicant’s 990 on the IRS website.

Category 2: Applicants must be fiscally sponsored or a non-arts specific 501(c)3 organization with arts-specific programming, or a 501(c)3 organization with the arts named in its mission but has less than one year of operations.

Category 3:
- Support for Organizations 3 is available for 501(c)3 organizations with operating expenses over $10 million, less in-kind contributions and direct financial support for other City of Houston Sources, as demonstrated in SMU DataArts reporting, and calculated as an average over the most recently completed three fiscal years and verified with the organization’s audit.
- Organizations must have in for existence for at least five years providing public programs throughout each calendar year and offering free and discounted programs
- Fiscally-sponsored organizations are not eligible.

Applicants in Categories 1 and 3 must be arts or history organizations with an art form, history, or preservation named in the purpose/mission statements found on Pages 1 or 2 of their most recently made public 990 Form, or they must be museums as defined by the International Council of Museums in 2007.

All applicants must provide official documentation demonstrating a physical address in the City of Houston limits which is verified by staff through the online Council Member verify mapping tool. P.O. Boxes are not accepted.

- June 9-June 28, 2021: Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs Reviews and Approves Award Recommendations
- June 29, 2021: Grants are Awarded and Grantees are Notified via Email

Applicants may only submit one application per grant program, per deadline, per year.
