Grants to Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Texas, and Virginia nonprofit organizations in eligible cities for projects that benefit local residents. Funding is intended for programs within the focus areas of STEM and financial education, response to natural disasters, safety, and assistance for families in need. Projects must take place in communities where the Funding Source has a business presence: San Antonio and Dallas, Texas; Chesapeake, Virginia; Phoenix, Arizona; Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Tampa, Florida.

Focus Areas:

  • Families in Need: Address basic human needs due to homelessness and hunger
  • Education: Promote mastery of STEM and financial literacy among students and teachers
  • Safety and Natural Disaster Response: Support safety, prevention, and natural disaster relief efforts for communities served by USAA

Estimated Size of Grant:

The minimum grant request that will be considered is $1,000.
The average grant awarded is between $5,000-$25,000.

Term of Contract:

Grant applications are accepted for one-time, non-recurring requests.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Organizations must have current tax exempt status under section 501(c) of the Internal Revenue Code and:
- Must be formally organized;
- Must exist for charitable purpose; and,
- Must never distribute profits.

Please note all of the above criteria on tax exempt status must be met in order to be eligible to apply for a grant.

Additionally, to be considered for funding, your organization should:
- Be approved by Internal Revenue Service as a tax exempt 501(c) organization for three (3) or more years prior to application;
- Demonstrate effective organizational, programmatic and financial objective setting and management;
- Provide evidence of broad-based support, with an accounting of funds received from public and private sources;
- Describe accurately and completely the target population to be served;
- Provide evidence that the proposed program/project is a response to a valid need, is superior to other competing services and/or encourages collaboration with other organizations for maximum leverage;
- Provide documentation of previous program success or substantial reasons to expect such success in the future; and,
- Instill confidence that programs have the capability to be sustained if/when grant support ends.

Requests for contributions to religious institutions (for example, churches, mosques, synagogues or other houses of worship or related ecumenical groups) will be denied.

Programs of faith based organizations such as soup kitchens, shelters for the homeless or job banks sponsored by (for example, financial, material or volunteer support) or located within a faith-based organization’s or religious institution’s facilities may be eligible for contributions if it is determined that the program does not require beneficiaries to learn about, adhere to, or convert to the faith doctrine.
