Description:

Request a Grant Writer

Grants of up to $10,000 per campus or up to $50,000 per district to Texas public schools to advance the health and wellness of children through exercise and nutrition programs. Funding is intended to reduce the incidence of childhood obesity. Applications are currently accepted from public school campuses seeking to create, supplement, or expand nutrition education programs in their schools.

X3E Grant funds may be used to expand, improve, and begin Farm Fresh Activities such as, but not limited to the following categories:

  1. Implementing a garden-based learning curriculum;
  2. School garden development or improvement including, but not limited to:
    • building garden beds;
    • planting an orchard;
    • creating a pollinator garden;
    • adding shaded areas to new or existing gardens to encourage outdoor learning;
    • improving walking areas and/or height of garden beds for students with disabilities;
    • creating walking trails to encourage physical activity near garden spaces;
    • paying for staff time for garden maintenance;
  3. A garden-to-plate program to increase the number of garden products served in school meals and snacks;
  4. A compost program that uses cafeteria food waste for enriching school or community gardens;
  5. Taste testing activities focused on seasonal products, using a framework such as, but not limited to TDA’s Harvest of the Month program;
  6. Networking events that strengthen local purchasing relationships with Texas farmers and ranchers;
  7. Other experiential learning opportunities that teach students about Texas agriculture such as, but not limited to, field trips to farms and/or farmers’ markets.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Total funding awarded to a single school district shall not exceed $10,000 per campus or $50,000, whichever is less.

Term of Contract:

Grant Period: August 1, 2021 – August 31, 2022

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Grant applications will be accepted from any public school campus in the State of Texas in good standing with the Texas Comptroller’s Office and, if applicable, the Texas Department of Agriculture.

If multiple campuses in a district are applying for the same project, the requests should be combined into one application.

Certain expenses may be prohibited by state or federal law or determined to be ineligible by program guidelines.

Examples of these expenditures include, but are not limited to the following:
- Alcoholic beverages;
- Contributions-charitable or political;
- Controlled assets (small equipment) are defined as certain items valued $500.00 - $4,999.99 which must also be inventoried, link to Controlled Property Listing. These items include Audio Equipment, Camera (Portable, Digital, SLR), TVs, Video Players/Recorders, Computer, Projectors, Smartphones, Tablets & Other Hand Held Devices;
- Entertainment;
- Equipment – Tangible personal property costing over $5,000 per unit and having a useful life over one year (e.g., freezers, kitchen equipment, etc.);
- Expenses falling outside of the contract period;
- Expenses for items not listed in the project budget or that fail to meet the intent of the program;
- Expenses that are not adequately documented or that do not meet the intent of the grant program;
- Gift cards;
- Indirect Costs;
- Tips; and
- Travel – No reimbursement for transportation, lodging, meals, or any food items related to travel.

Pre-Application Information:

Application must be received by TDA before close of business (5:00PM CT) on Thursday, June 17, 2021.

TDA program staff will send an email acknowledging the receipt of the application as soon as administratively possible with an application ID number.
