Grants of up to $25,000 per year to USA, Canada, and International early-career investigators for medical research. Funding is intended to assist new researchers in compiling initial data related to the submission of more substantial grant applications. The purpose of the program is to support new investigator-initiated research projects in the areas of thyroid function, thyroid disease, and thyroid cancer.

Topics may include, but are not limited to, Disorders of Thyroid Function, Iodine Uptake and Metabolism, Thyroid Autoimmunity, Thyroid Cancer, Thyroid Hormone Effect and Metabolism, Thyroid Hormone in Development and the Brain, Thyroid Imaging, Thyroid Nodules and Goiter, Thyroid and Pregnancy. 

The American Thyroid Association, ThyCa, and Bite Me Cancer have committed to fund grants in the following research areas: 

  • 3 Thyroid Disease or Thyroid Cancer from ATA
  • 1 Thyroid & Development Grant from ATA 
  • 2 Thyroid Cancer from ThyCa
  • 1 Medullary Thyroid Cancer Grant from ThyCa 
  • 1 Medullary Thyroid Cancer  from Bite Me Cancer and ThyCa

Grants will be awarded for up to two-year terms.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

1. Investigators must be one of the following:

a. Junior faculty (i.e. Instructor, Assistant Professor, Tenured Researcher, or Junior Lecturer) who began their first independent academic position less than 6 years ago (2014 or later). PIs with an academic title different from Instructor, Assistant Professor, Tenured Researcher, or Junior Lecturer may be eligible however are required to submit a letter confirming that the PI is in an independent junior faculty role.

b. Postdoctoral research fellows or clinical fellows in their last year that will have a junior faculty position by July 2020 (Instructor, Assistant Professor, Tenured Researcher, or Junior Lecturer). A written letter from the applicant’s institution confirming that the applicant will have an independent, junior faculty position by July 2020 is required prior to proceeding with the application.

c. Trainee applying for MTC Grant with Supervising Mentor/Faculty. Trainees (postdoctoral research fellows, residents, or graduate students working towards an MD or a PhD) that are applying for a medullary thyroid cancer grant with a supervising mentor or faculty member are eligible. A mentor/faculty member’s CV must be submitted with a short proposal. A mentor/faculty supervisor is not eligible to receive more than one thyroid research grant in the same cycle.

2. Individuals who have been a Principal Investigator (PI) on an NIH RO1 (or equivalent grant) and/or that have received an ATA, ThyCa or BMC research grant are not eligible. Recipients of NIH R29, R21 and KO8 awards are eligible.

3. . Applicants and mentors of MTC proposals must apply for ATA membership by April 2020 or be an ATA member (through 12/31/20). New applicants are eligible for complimentary membership their first year.

Applications are limited to one per individual researcher.

Funds cannot be used for the PI or mentor’s salary.

It is the policy of the ATA that no indirect cost recovery (ICR) is granted and that all funds are direct costs only. Applicants from institutions must obtain a waiver of ICR to receive funding.
