Grants to Austin, Texas nonprofit organizations, individuals, community groups, academic and private institutions, and PTAs for projects that promote the conservation of Austin’s urban forest. School applicants should contact program staff prior to applying. Funding is intended to strengthen Austin’s urban forest by supporting stewardship activities, such as tree planting, tree care, education, and disease control projects.

Urban trees face different challenges than their rural counterparts. In a city, trees must be cared for, pests managed, and trees planted to support a healthy canopy cover. When you apply for a grant you’re investing time and energy into your community that will benefit you and future generations.

Eligible projects:

  • Enhance the long-term health of Austin's urban forest
  • Support some or all aspects of the community Urban Forest vision
  • Are located on, or benefit, civic property within Austin's limits
  • Follow City of Austin, federal, and state regulations.

For planting trees on a school campus:

  • Tree plantings should be planned for late fall and winter. Plan your project around that time frame.
  • An important part of a proposal should include irrigation. If deemed appropriate for the project, the UFG can pay to have irrigation lines installed.
  • Get the kids and community involved.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants can include:
- Parent-teacher groups
- Academic and private institutions
- Nonprofit organizations
- Community groups
- Motivated individuals committed to engaging their community

For trees planted on a school campus, if possible, apply on behalf of (or in conjunction with) the school PTA or the local neighborhood association. The Fund prefers to see applications from groups of folks that support the project together.

Pre-Application Information:

Applications are due January 1st and July 1st. Applications received after the deadlines will be considered for the following application cycle.

For school plantings, before you start on your application, first contact the AISD forester to discuss your idea. This will help to guide your project in the right direction for appropriate species selection, placement, utilities and other considerations.

Please Note: Any members of the public wishing to plant trees in the public parks need to be properly vetted through the Parks and Recreation Community Initiated Improvement Project process. For questions about the process or your potential project submission, please contact Christin Canul.
