Grants to USA, Canada, and International scientists at nonprofit institutions for medical research. Funding is intended to support research about the treatment, diagnosis, and prevention of cancer. Projects should be innovative and novel as well as of high scientific quality.

Worldwide Cancer Research is looking for innovative and truly novel ideas that have the potential to revolutionize understanding of cancer and how to beat it. Project grants are awarded to support basic, fundamental or translational research into the prevention, diagnosis or treatment of cancer. Research is welcomed that draws on epidemiological, behavioral and clinical data to provide a starting point for a new avenue of research. Multidisciplinary or discipline-hopping projects are encouraged where this helps stimulate innovation.

Worldwide Cancer Research seeks:

  • Innovation and creativity - research that takes intellectual risks to find something new about cancer or how it could be prevented, diagnosed or treated. Worldwide Cancer Research funds truly new ideas, often those that other funders may overlook.
  • Focus and novelty - Worldwide Cancer Research wants to make the most of donations by funding standalone research projects that tackle a novel idea. Projects seek to answer a new and focused research question. Worldwide Cancer Research funds research that opens new avenues for research or takes the first step towards new tests or treatments for cancer.
  • Transformative and long-term - Worldwide Cancer Research supports blue-sky thinking in research and want to direct funding towards projects that could transform an area of cancer research or one day have a major impact on the lives of people with cancer. However, they recognise that important discoveries take time to bear fruit and that it may be many years before the research leads to lives saved or improved. Worldwide Cancer Research takes the first step in the research journey. Results from funded projects are often used to secure larger funding awards from other organisations to take the research to the next stage.
  • Scientific quality - Worldwide Cancer Research wants to see the most creative and exciting ideas, but they are also responsible stewards of donations. Worldwide Cancer Research needs to see robust scientific reasoning and appropriate solid methodology to back it up. The aims of a project should be feasible with the time and resources requested, and with the expertise of the research team.
